Sundown STX Motard: Short Rides and Trips in 2014

My motorcycling activities in group "officially" begun on the 12th of Jaunary, 2014.  On that date we did a short ride to a region in the State of Goias that encompasses the towns of Brazabrantes, Nova Veneza and Nerópolis.  We enjoyed a lot this trip in a hot and dry summer day in our State.

This was a great opportunity to begin 2014 in style and with friends.  Along the year I intend to do many short rides and trips properly with my Sundown STX Motard.  I will be commemorating in May, 2014 my 44 Years of Motorcycling.

In this way I am consolidating the status acquired with my Sundown STX Motard, as the chinese bike that circulated more throughout Brazil.

On the 26th of January, 2014 we did a short trip the Marata Fall located close to the town of Pires do Rio - GO.  The trip totalled 340 km, and we enjoyed the sunny day.  Nature is at its best in the whole region, specially the fall's surroundings, due to the rainy season that is on.

We had been there already in 2012, on that occasion we could observe how beautiful and well preserved that place is, a true Nature jewel.

On the way to the fall our group was made by four couples on motorcycles (Yamaha XTZ-X 250cc, Sundown STX Motard 200cc, Honda Shadow 600cc and Kawasaki Vulcan 900cc) and a couple going by car (Hyundai Santa Fé); our friend Renato with his Honda NC 700X (who met us on the fall) came back to Goiânia - GO with us.

In June, 2014 I went with my friends Mauro and Marinho to the Barter Fair of Olhos D'Água, this place is a district of Alexania - GO.  This is a very traditional event that happens twice yearly - on the first weekend of June and December.  We left Goiânia - GO on Sunday morning (01/06/2014), returning by the afternoon of the same day.

Our group came across two trail bikers of Anápolis - GO (Fred and João Amélio). Parking Area of Ficus Restaurant.

On Sunday, 15th of June, 2014 - we did a wonderful ride of around 400 km.  We left Goiânia - GO by 08:00 AM and went on a circuit through the towns of Goiatuba, Joviânia, Pontalina, Cromínia, Oloana, Aragoiânia, returning to Goiânia - GO by the day ending.  We enjoyed a pleasant day: sunny and fresh, and with empty roads due to the World Cup events broadcast on TV; all those factors favoured a safe ride.

The Wonder of Terra Ronca

Taking advantage of the Corpus Christi holiday - the 19th of June, 2014, that conveniently coincided with a Thursday I decided to make a trip long dreamed of: to get to know the Terra Ronca State Park located between Guarani de Goiás and São Domingos - GO.

I left Goiânia - GO in the morning - by 08:00 AM - and by 04:00 PM I arrived in Posse - GO. I did a very relaxed trip, simply enjoying a sunny day; the roads were empty and the 512 km I rode between the two cities seemed to be a fraction of what it is in reality.

Next morning I left Posse - GO in direction of the Terra Ronca State Park.   After 39 km riding on paved road that take us to Guarani de Goiás I continued on gravel road.

The impact when we arrive at the Terra Ronca cave is hard to describe, due to a mix of feelings.  It's very dimension is to be appreciated with calm so our senses can adapt accordingly.  Principally taking in account the size and proportions of this wonderful natural landmark.  It is enough pointing that it's aboboda is more than 90 meters high. This is equivalent to a 30 floor building.

The raw beauty of the "sertão goiano" (State of Goiás outback) is latent and we easily feel it along all the State Park extension.  I rode around 60 km inside the Park - between the two gates.

Overall I went through 170 km of unpaved and dirty roads between the towns of Guarani de Goiás and Campos Belos - GO.  Along many stretches of this itinerary I had to ride over various kind of natural elements (gravel, sand banks, rocky surface, and in some parts a mix of all of them). Additionaly there are stretches of puim - a layer of a powder like fine dust, yellowish in colour that covers totally the soil underneath it, turning it very difficult to pilot a motorcycle over it.  Principally if we consider the fact that my motorbike is fitted with street tyres and not trail tyres.

But my 44 Years of Motorcycling - including all the years riding small motorcycles, sometimes over dirt roads - eventually enabled me to face this challenge.  It is worth saying that this was a very pleasant challenge for me.

This trip/adventure is dedicated to my late friend of childhood, adolescence, and a contemporary colleage at the University of Brasília - UnB (during the first decade of 1970) Fernando de Almeida França (In Memoriam).  He gave a lot of incentive to this site of mine, and he was a unconditional supporter of my motorcycle adventures.

In this trip to Terra Ronca I rode a total of 1.374 km, and my Sundown STX Motard had a consumption 42,23 litre of gasoline.  This results in the excelent average of 32,54 km/litre.  When finishing this adventure my bike's odometer showed 54.025 km ridden in total (since its acquisition on the 2nd of May, 2008).

The itinerary of my trip was made through the following trajectory: Goiânia - Brasília - Posse - Guarani de Goiás - São Domingos - Divinópolis de Goiás - Campos Belos - Teresina de Goiás - Alto Paraíso - Brasília - Goiânia.

Brasília Moto Capital 2014

On the 26th of July, 2014 I went to Brasília - D.F. doing a round trip with friends (Mauro and Toninho) specially to check the annual motorcycling event Brasília Moto Capital 2014.  Afternoon the same day we returned to Goiânia - GO.

As always the event was very organized, with bikes from all over Brazil.  Everything went smoothly and the public felt at home.  This is an event with a big crowd attendance, all the lovers of motorcycling and bikes like it.  There is room for other exotic vehicles as those below.

Rio Azuis - (Aurora do Tocantins - TO) - Azuis River

One of the shortest rivers on Earth

Over the period ranging from 9th to the 13th of August, 2014 I did a very interesting trip to the State of Tocantins, more precisely to the region of Aurora do Tocantins - TO - Brasil, in order to know another wonder of Mother Nature - the Azuis River.

This was an extremely enjoyable and pleasurable trip: I went through empty and well maintained roads - principally after Brasília - D.F. towards Campos Belos - GO initially, and after from Campos Belos - GO up to Rio Azuis (after the town of Aurora do Tocantins - TO - Brasil); the days travelled were sunny and the weather was mild, even considering the period of the year (dry season); the views of the Sertões from the States of Goiás and Tocantins are splendid thus turning the trip more enjoyable.

Click on the photo below in order to see it full size.  To get to know this small river was a priviledge to me.

Considered one of the shortest rivers on Earth, with its 147 meters of extension, its waters come flowing from a foothill and meet another river (Sobrado River) immediately after.  It is important to mention that its volume of water keeps unchanged and constant along the seasons of the year.

It is important to mention that the views within the State of Goiás at the Chapada dos Veadeiros, and the hills and sierras between Teresina de Goiás and Campos Belos - GO (passing through Monte Alegre de Goiás) are really beautiful.  The Paranã River deserves special mention as well, principally where it is crossed by the GO-118 road.

By the same token the views along the roads of the State of Tocantins, mainly those from Sierra Geral - imponent and lenghty - insinuating along meadows and endless fields are gifts for us with their magnificent panoramas.

I feel atracted by this rich Nature, with preserved spots out of reach of the busy and stressed city crowds.  I have been specially priviledged during this year of 2014 for doing those trips.  Travelling over regions previously visited in other trips, and conquering new territories on this particularly beautiful Brazilian hinterland (we could easily call this as the Brazilian Outback).

I really appreciate to get to know people from the small towns and observe their daily routine, far from the craziness of the big cities.  The rural areas and the vast plains draw my attention.  The group of students in the photos below were at the margin of the GO-118 road, waiting to the school bus to take them to Monte Alegre de Goiás.

The children and teenagers, under an adult supervision, were waiting for the school bus to take them to their school in Monte Alegre de Goiás.  All of them belong to the Kalunga's communities around that spot.

On the following day, after leaving Teresina de Goiás heading to Alto Paraíso de Goiás, I observed a cyclist on the road.  Immediately I recognized him as the same cyclist I saw the previous day, after Monte Alegre de Goiás, more than 100 km behind that point of the road.  I stopped to greet him and to have a little chat with that adventurer.  This resulted in this photo below.

To appreciate the beauty of the country's many regions is a priviledge for any traveller keen to get the most from this wonderful Brazilian Hinterland.  The State of Goiás is particularly well endowed on this matter, principally due to the magnificent views of the Central High Plains (The Planalto Central of Brasil).

On this trip I made a point of keeping the cruising speed on the bracket of 100 - 110 km/hour - that's what I usually do on my trips, with the tachimeter showing the 6.000 rpm mark (3.000 rpm below the red zone).  This resulted on the excellent performance of my motorcycle, producing a very economic trip with the bike averaging more than 30 km/litre of gasoline.

Photos of this trip are available at the link below:

I totalled 1.442 km ridden from the 9th to the 13th of August, 2014; my motorcycle utilized 48,00 litre of gasoline, thus yielding an average of 30,04 km/litre.

22nd Rally dos Sertões

A view from the boxes and around - 23rd of August, 2014

Once more the city of Goiânia was the starting point of the Rally dos Sertões; in this year all the huge circus of this rally was placed inside the Goiânia International Autodrome.  In my opinion this is the ideal place to host this event, mainly because of the many available open spaces in order to lodge the teams and their structure of support to competitors.

I spent a very fine morning on Saturday, the 23rd of August, 2014 circulating there, taking photos, and observing all the scene of this superb Rally.  The vehicles involved in this competition are world class and  really caught my attention.

The highlight of my visit to the Rally circus on Saturday morning (the 23rd of August, 2014) was meeting  Paulo Gonçalves (Portugal). He is the winner of last year's edition of Rally dos Sertões (2013) and current title holder of the World Cross Country Rally of FIM - Team Honda HRC (Honda CRF 450 Rally).

On the last week of August, 2014 I made a general maintenance of my motorcycle addressing some parts that should be exchange by new ones: retainers of both arms of the upside down front suspension, the left side plastic ring that support/allows the plastic cover of the arm to slide, the front sprocket (14 teeth) in use since March, 2009 (used along five and a half years or 50.000 km).  I replaced the rubber chain slider as well. I took this opportunity to change the front bulb socket, as well as to redo and fix some filaments of the led assembly on the rear/brake ligth.

When I returned from my trip to Rio Azuis I noticed that the swing arm (aluminium) was broken.  This time I decided to weld the part, reinforcing the inner front face of the swingarm at its left side. On May, 2010 I had the same problem (a broken swing arm), but on that occasion I replaced the part by a new one with no cost whatsoever to me.  On that occasion the bike's factory (Sundown) honoured the factory warranty.

Anyway, all this is perfectly acceptable and normal for a motorcycle that has been ridden in all kind of roads, and that has clocked more than 56.000 km since May, 2008.

Every opportunity I have to ride my bike on roads I take it, on the 26th of September, 2014 I went on a short ride with some friends. This way we had a pleasant weekend doing what we like most, that is to ride our bikes.

Vão de Almas (Kalunga Territory - Teresina de Goiás - GO)

Since my first solo trip to the land of Kalunga in 2009 I was intending to return there in order to get to know other isolated localities deep in the Goiano Outback (tracing a free comparison with the Aussie Outback). In this way I returned there in 2010 with my wife Theresa to the community of Engenho II. Following that many other trips happened to various Brazilian regions, but definitely I couldn't stop thinking about doing another adventure trip to Kalunga land.

Mapa da região dos Kalungas.

Source: http://horizontegeografico.com.br

Finally on the 11th of October, 2014 I left Goiânia - GO by 07:00 a.m. heading to Teresina de Goiás, where I arrived at the afternoon the same day, with the intention of getting to know Vão de Almas.  The following day I went on my bike through the gravel road that takes us to Vão de Almas (or Vão das Almas), and I took many photos.

The mentioned photos are available at the link:

https://onedrive.live.com/?id=F4596AEAEF09CF68%211678&cid=F4596AEAEF09CF68&group=0

I couldn't go deep further in that isolated and inhospitable patch of Kalunga territory, despite being the gravel road in good condition, albeit with steep ascent now and then.  I noticed a slipping clutch on my motorcycle, so I wasn't enthused to risk my return to Teresina de Goiás (my base in that trip).  In spite of that I made all the way up to the top of the wonderful sierra.

I was very careful when accelerating my bike's engine, avoiding the high revs.  I was aware that if going down further ahead downwards the other side of the sierra I would have to return upwards, and consequently I would have to rev high.

Click on the photo below in order to see it full size.  The beauty of the Goiano Outback.

Magnífica vista das serra em território Kalunga, rumo a Vão das Almas.

The imposing view of this sierra deep in the heart of Kalunga land, heading to Vão das Almas. Morning of the 12th October, 2014.

I returned then to Teresina de Goiás a little bit frustrated for not having travelled deep in this patch of the Kalunga land.  But returning to this region by 2015 is definitely in my plans.

On the 14th of October, 2014 I came back to Goiânia - GO; in this trip I totalled 1.091 km ridden. My bike had an average fuel consumption of 28,42 km/litre. It is important mentioning that this trip was made under very high temperatures, which are prevailing in our region by then.

On the
27th of October, 2014 I replaced my motorcycle's clutch (with the respective gaskets, motor oil and oil filter). The hodometer showed 58.275 km ridden.

Corumbá Fall - (Corumbá de Goiás - GO)

On Sunday, the 23rd of November,  2014 I and my friend Mauro Gomes did an interesting short trip passing by Abadiânia Velha - GO, Corumbá de Goiás and Corumbá Fall, returning to Goiânia - GO by the end of the day.

We spent the day at the Corumbá Fall (private property with a complete structure to attend the adventure tourism segment), we went through the many trails really appreciating the surroundings.  The place is very well maintained, and offers many natural attractions where is possible to practive adventure sports such as buoy rafting, tiroleza, hiking trails, toboggan.

Some photos I've taken of this trip are available at this link:

The beutiful Corumbá Fall by midday, Sunday, the 23rd of November, 2014.

The beautiful Corumbá Fall by midday, Sunday, the 23rd of November, 2014.

We initiated our return trip by 3:30 PM, and we rode our bikes all the way back to Goiânia - GO, from Corumbá de Goiás - GO in the rain.  In this way we completed our trip experiencing the sensation of a complete adventure day, as we had a very warm and dry day till 16:00 PM. I intend to return there next year in order to enjoy all the natural attractions the place has to offer.

In order to close 2014 in great style I joined a group of friends in a short trip of 280 km in a very interesting traject. This short ride was organized by my friend Mauro Gomes, he is a big catalyst of the rides in group we normally do.  He is that kind of motorcyclist always ready to take on new trips and rides, and is keen to motivate our group to join in those rides and trips.
